Model Antique takes you back to the days when these guitars were originally designed and build. This is a 100% replica of a Selmer oval sound hole guitar. Besides using the traditional materials the complete guitar is made with traditional construction techniques (jigs, tools etc.). This results in a guitar that has a convincing aged and ‘used’ look, but also has the vintage sound that goes with old and played guitars. This guitar has a 67 cm scale length, and 14-th fret clear to the body.

What is ageing?

With this model I experimented with the weight and especially with the finish of the guitar in a way that was never done before. To ‘age’ or ‘relic’ a guitar is not new. Nowadays it is often seen on electric guitars. Artificial ageing or relicing is the technique to make a guitar look aged, as if it already has sustained many years of use. I worked on many old guitars studying the chemical and natural processes that take places in metal, wood, and lacquer over a period of years, and the environments that these instruments existed in. I received many positive reactions about the cosmetics of this antique finish, but the main reason to start experimenting with this kind of finish was to find out if it would increase the responsiveness of the top, and the overall sound. It took me quite some time and tried many different materials, but I finally found a formula that worked. The Antique model is a newly build guitar with old looks, and due to the special finish it immediatley has an impressive sound available. It is responsive in a unique way. The sound is very ‘vintage’ and close to the original Selmer.

The test

Model Antique was introduced at the Django Reinhardt festival in Samois sur Seine 2006. The guitar was played on stage by Wawau Adler and by Stochelo Rosenberg (guest performance with Bireli Lagrene). Never before I had so much interest in a specific guitar in our guitar stand as with this guitar. Gypsy guitarist Moreno requested to play the guitar for a new film to be made about gypsy jazz music.

Optional

Eimers Guitars offers several options for choice of wood. The guitar is also available for left handed players (no extra costs)

Wood for the back and sides

There is a large variety of hard wood and tropical wood available for building instruments. It is impossible to keep all these different woods in stock.
